A - What The Maker's Manual says -

Encouragement (New Testament)

Acts 23 : 10 - And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the castle. And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer: for as you have testified concerning me at Jerusalem, so must you bear witness also at Rome.

Encouragement (Old Testament)

Deuteronomy 31 : 1 - And Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. And he said to them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD has said to me, You shall not go over this Jordan. The LORD your God, he will go over before you, and he will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before you, as the LORD has said. And the LORD shall do to them as he did to Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites, and to the land of them, whom he destroyed. And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that you may do to them according to all the commandments which I have commanded you.

1 Samuel 23 : 16 - Jonathan, Saul's son, arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God. And he said to him, Fear not; for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you; and you shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you; and that also Saul my father knows. And they two made a covenant before Jehovah: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.

1 Samuel 30 : 1 - And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had made a raid upon the South, and upon Ziklag, and had smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire, and had taken captive the women and all that were therein, both small and great: they slew not any, but carried them off, and went their way. And when David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captive. Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep. And David’s two wives were taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. And David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David strengthened himself in Jehovah his God

1 Chronicles 28 : 20 - And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed; for Jehovah God, even my God, is with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of Jehovah be finished. And, behold, there are the courses of the priests and the Levites, for all the service of the house of God: and there shall be with you in all manner of work every willing man that has skill, for any manner of service: also the captains and all the people will be wholly at your commandment.

Joshua 1 : 7 - Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

Joshua 2 : 22 - And they went, and came to the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not. Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them. And they said to Joshua, Truly Jehovah has delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.

Psalm 119 : 73 - (JOD ) - Your hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn your commandments. They that fear you will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in your word. I know, O LORD, that your judgments are right, and that you in faithfulness have afflicted me. Let, I pray you, your merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to your word to your servant. Let your tender mercies come to me, that I may live: for your law is my delight. Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in your precepts. Let those that fear you turn to me, and those that have known your testimonies. Let my heart be sound in your statutes; that I be not ashamed.

Exhortation (New Testament)

Acts 4 : 36 - Joseph, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, Son of exhortation*), a Levite, a man of Cyprus by race, having a field, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.

Exhortation (Old Testament)

Job 4 : 1 - Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, If one assay to commune with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking? Behold, you have instructed many, And you have strengthened the weak hands. Your words have upheld him that was falling, And you have made firm the feeble knees. But now it is come to you, and you faint; It touches you, and you are troubled. ( 8 )

Job 16 : 1 - Then Job answered and said, I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are you all. Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldens you that you answer? I also could speak as you do: if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief. Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased? But now he has made me weary: you have made desolate all my company. And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face. He tears me in his wrath, who hates me: he gnashes upon me with his teeth; my enemy sharpens his eyes upon me. They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. God has delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked. I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. His archers compass me round about, he cleaves my reins asunder, and does not spare; he pours out my gall upon the ground. He breaks me with breach upon breach, he runs upon me like a giant. I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust. My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; Not for any injustice in my hands: also my prayer is pure. O earth, cover not you my blood, and let my cry have no place. Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high. My friends scorn me: but my eye pours out tears to God. O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his neighbour! When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.

Comfort (New Testament)

Acts 11 : 23 .... who, when he was come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad; and he exhorted* them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave to the Lord: for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith

Acts 13 : 15 - Now Paul and his company set sail from Paphos, and came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem. But they, passing through from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia; and they went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. And Paul stood up, and beckoning with the hand said, Men of Israel, and you that fear God, hearken: The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they sojourned in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm led he them forth out of it. And for about the time of forty years as a nursing-father bare he them in the wilderness. And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land for an inheritance, for about four hundred and fifty years: and after these things he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. And afterward they asked for a king: and God gave to them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for the space of forty years. And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; to whom also he bare witness and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who shall do all My will. Of this man's seed has God according to promise brought to Israel a Saviour, Jesus;

Acts 14 : 22 - confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God.

Acts 15 : 32 - And Judas and Silas, being themselves also prophets, exhorted* the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

Acts 20 : 1 - And after the uproar ceased, Paul having sent for the disciples and exhorted them, took leave of them, and departed to go into Macedonia. And when he had gone through those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece. And when he had spent three months there, and a plot was laid against him by Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he determined to return through Macedonia. And there accompanied him as far as Asia, Sopater of Beroea, the son of Pyrrhus; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus. But these had gone before, and were waiting for us at Troas. And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came to them to Troas in five days, where we tarried seven days.

Romans 15 : 4 - whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures* we might have hope

1 Corinthians 16 : 10 - Now if Timothy come, see that he be with you without fear; for he works the work of the Lord, as I also do: let no man therefore despise him. But set him forward on his journey in peace, that he may come to me: for I expect him with the brethren.

1 Corinthians 16 : 18 - And I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they supplied. For they refreshed my spirit and yours: acknowledge therefore them that are such.

2 Corinthians 7 : 5 - For even when we were come into Macedonia our flesh had no relief, but we were afflicted on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. Nevertheless he that comforts the lowly, even God, comforted us by the coming of Titus; and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort wherewith he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced yet more.

Galatians 6 : 9 - let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. So then, as we have opportunity, let us work that which is good toward all men, and especially toward them that are of the household of the faith.

Colossians 4 : 8 - All my affairs shall Tychicus make known to you, the beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow-servant in the Lord: whom I have sent you for this very purpose, that you may know our state, and that he may comfort your hearts; together with Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known to you all things that are done here. Aristarchus my fellow-prisoner salutes you, and Mark, the cousin of Barnabas (touching whom you received commandments; if he come to you, receive him), and Jesus that is called Justus, who are of the circumcision: these only are my fellow-workers to the kingdom of God, men that have been a comfort to me.

1 Thessalonians 2 : 1 - For yourselves, brethren, know our entering in to you, that it has not been found vain: but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we waxed bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict. For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: but even as we have been approved of God to be intrusted with the gospel, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God who proves our hearts. For neither at any time were we found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness, God is witness; nor seeking glory of men, neither from you nor from others, when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 4 : 16 - For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first; then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4 : 18 - so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 5 : 11 - Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also you do. But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all.

2 Thessalonians 2 : 16 - Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

Philemon 20 - Yes, brother, let me have joy of you in the Lord: refresh my heart in Christ.

Hebrews 3 : 13 - but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called To-day; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin: for we are become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm to the end

Hebrews 10 : 24 - let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works

Hebrews 12 : 5 - you have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when you are reproved of him

Hebrews 13 : 22 - But I exhort you, brethren, bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written to you in few words.Know you that our brother Timothy has been set at liberty; with whom, if he come shortly, I will see you. Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Comfort (Old Testament)

Psalm 34 : 10 - The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger; But they that seek Jehovah shall not want any good thing. Come, you children, hearken to me: I will teach you the fear of Jehovah. What man is he that desires life, And loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, And thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; Seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of Jehovah are toward the righteous, And his ears are open to their cry. The face of Jehovah is against them that do evil, To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cried, and Jehovah heard, And delivered them out of all their troubles. Jehovah is nigh to them that are of a broken heart, And saves such as are of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous; But Jehovah delivers him out of them all.

Psalm 143 : 8 - Cause me to hear your lovingkindness in the morning; For in you do I trust: Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; For I lift up my soul to you. Deliver me, O Jehovah, from my enemies: I flee to you to hide me. Teach me to do your will; For you are my God: Your Spirit is good; Lead me in the land of uprightness. Quicken me, O Jehovah, for your name’s sake: In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble. And in your lovingkindness cut off mine enemies, And destroy all them that afflict my soul; For I am your servant.

2 Samuel 17 : 23 - And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and got him home, to his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father. Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab’s mother. And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead. And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched grain, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

Isaiah 40 : 1 - Comfort you, comfort you my people, says your God. Speak you comfortably to Jerusalem; and cry to her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received of Jehovah’s hand double for all her sins.

Isaiah 57 : 17 - For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him; I hid my face and was wroth; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts to him and to his mourners. I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace, to him that is far off and to him that is near, saiys Jehovah; and I will heal him. But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

Encouragers strengthen other people, show appreciation and build them up...

They avoid flattery and look for genuine ground on which to build self-esteem.

In the present-day scenario of domestic strife, crime and international terror, encouragement to look up for protection of a higher authority is vital.
