Acceptance (New Testament)
Matthew 9 : 9 (Mark 2 : 13 , Luke 5 : 27) And as Jesus passed by from thence, he saw a man, called Matthew, sitting at the place of toll: and he said to him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why eats your Teacher with the publicans and sinners? But when he heard it, he said, They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick. But go you and learn what this means, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.
Luke 12 : 8 - And I say to you, Every one who shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: but he that denies me in the presence of men shall be denied in the presence of the angels of God. And every one who shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but to him that blasphems against the Holy Spirit it shall not be forgiven.
John 5 : 41 - I receive not glory from men. But I know you, that you have not the love of God in yourselves. I am come in my Father's name, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that comes from the only God you seek not? Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuses you, even Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you believe not his writings, how shall you believe my words?
Luke 15 : 22 - But the father said to his servants, Bring forth quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: and bring the fatted calf, and kill it, and let us eat, and make merry: for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
Acts 7 : 35 - This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made you a ruler and a judge? him has God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush. This man led them forth, having wrought wonders and signs in Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years. This is that Moses, who said to the children of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up to you from among your brethren, like to me. This is he that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him in the Mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who received living oracles to give to us: to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but thrust him from them, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt, saying to Aaron, Make us gods that shall go before us: for as for this Moses, who led us forth out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him. And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
Acts 9 : 26 - And when he was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: and they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared to them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus. And he was with them going in and going out at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord: and he spake and disputed against the Grecian Jews; but they were seeking to kill him. And when the brethren knew it, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him forth to Tarsus.
Acts 10 : 9 - Now on the morrow, as they were on their journey, and drew nigh to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour: and he became hungry, and desired to eat: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance; and he beheld the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth: wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the heaven. And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common and unclean. And a voice came to him again the second time, What God has cleansed, make not common. And this was done thrice: and straightway the vessel was received up into heaven. Now while Peter was much perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood before the gate, and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, were lodging there. And while Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold, three men seek you. But arise, and get down, and go with them, nothing doubting: for I have sent them.
Acts 10 : 27 - And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many come together: and he said to them, You yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to join himself or come to one of another nation; and yet to me has God showed that I should not call any man common or unclean: wherefore also I came without gainsaying, when I was sent for. I ask therefore with what intent you sent for me. And Cornelius said, Four days ago, until this hour, I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel, and said, Cornelius, your prayer is heard, and your alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. Send therefore to Joppa, and call to you Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodges in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea side. Forthwith therefore I sent to you; and you have well done that you are come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all things that have been commanded you of the Lord.
Acts 15 : 1 - And certain men came down from Judaea and taught the brethren, saying, Except you be circumcised after the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved. And when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and questioning with them, the brethren appointed that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question. They therefore, being brought on their way by the church, passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy to all the brethren. And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church and the apostles and the elders, and they rehearsed all things that God had done with them. But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, It is needful to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses. And the apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider of this matter. And when there had been much questioning, Peter rose up, and said to them, Brethren, you know that a good while ago God made choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit, even as he did to us; and he made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. Now therefore why make you trial of God, that you should put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that we shall be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in like manner as they. And all the multitude kept silence; and they hearkened to Barnabas and Paul rehearsing what signs and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles through them.
Acts 16 : 1 - Paul .... came also to Derbe and to Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek. The same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
Romans 14 : 1 - But him that is weak in faith receive you, yet not for decision of scruples. One man has faith to eat all things: but he that is weak eats herbs. Let not him that eats set at nought him that eats not; and let not him that eats not judge him that eats: for God has received him. Who are you that judges the servant of another? to his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he shall be made to stand; for the Lord has power to make him stand. One man esteems one day above another: another esteems every day alike. Let each man be fully assured in his own mind. He that regards the day, regards it to the Lord: and he that eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he that eats not, to the Lord he eats not, and gives God thanks. For none of us lives to himself, and none dies to himself. For whether we live, we live to the Lord; or whether we die, we die to the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.
Romans 15 : 7 - Now the God of patience and of comfort grant you to be of the same mind one with another according to Christ Jesus: that with one accord you may with one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive you one another, even as Christ also received you, to the glory of God. For I say that Christ has been made a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, that he might confirm the promises given to the fathers, and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, Therefore will I give praise to you among the Gentiles, And sing to your name. And again he says, Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; And let all the peoples praise him. And again, Isaiah says, There shall be the root of Jesse, And he that arises to rule over the Gentiles; On him shall the Gentiles hope.
Galatians 4 : 12 - I beseech you, brethren, become as I am, for I also am become as you are. You did me no wrong: but you know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel to you the first time: and that which was a temptation (trial) to you in my flesh you despised not, nor rejected; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. Where then is that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. So then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?
Ephesians 1 : 6 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ: even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before him in love: having foreordained us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved: in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trepasses, according to the riches of his grace,
Ephesians 2 : 11 - Wherefore remember, that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called Circumcision, in the flesh, made by hands; that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you that once were far off are made nigh in the blood of Christ.
Philippians 4 : 1 - Wherefore, my brethren beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my beloved. I exhort Euodia, and I exhort Syntyche, to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, I beseech you also, true yokefellow, help these women, for they labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow-workers, whose names are in the book of life.
2 Timothy 4 : 9 - Give diligence to come shortly to me: for Demas forsook me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with you; for he is useful to me for ministering. But Tychicus I sent to Ephesus. The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, bring when you come, and the books, especially the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord will render to him according to his works: of whom do you also beware; for he greatly withstood our words.
Hebrews 12 : 18 - For you are not come to a mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and to blackness, and darkness, and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken to them; for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned; and so fearful was the appearance, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake: but you are come unto mount Zion
James 2 : 1 - My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing; and you have regard to him that wears the fine clothing, and say, Sit here in a good place; and you say to the poor man, Stand there, or sit under my footstool; Do you not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats? Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called? Howbeit if you fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you do well: but if you have respect of persons, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.
Being Accepted (Old Testament)
1 Samuel 20 : 1 - And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is my iniquity? and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life? And he said to him, Far from it; you shall not die: behold, my father does nothing either great or small, but that he discloses it to me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so. And David swore moreover, and said, Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he says, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as Jehovah lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death. Then said Jonathan to David, Whatever your soul desires, I will even do it for you. And David said to Jonathan, Behold, to-morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third day at even. If your father miss me at all, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Beth-lehem his city; for it is the yearly sacrifice there for all the family. If he say thus, It is well; your servant shall have peace: but if he be wroth, then know that evil is determined by him. Therefore deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Jehovah with you: but if there be in me iniquity, slay me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father? And Jonathan said, Far be it from you; for if I should at all know that evil were determined by my father to come upon you, then would not I tell it you? Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me if perchance your father answer you roughly? And Jonathan said to David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field. ( 12 ) And Jonathan said to David, Jehovah, the God of Israel, be witness: when I have sounded my father about this time to-morrow, or the third day, behold, if there be good toward David, shall I not then send to you, and disclose it to you? Jehovah do so to Jonathan, and more also, should it please my father to do you evil, if I disclose it not to you, and send you away, that you may go in peace: and Jehovah be with you, as he has been with my father. And you shall not only while yet I live show me the lovingkindness of Jehovah, that I die not; but also you shall not cut off our kindness from my house for ever; no, not when Jehovah has cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth. So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, And Jehovah will require it at the hand of David’s enemies ( 15 ).
Ecclesiastes 9 : 4 - For to him that is joined with all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. As well their love, as their hatred and their envy, is perished long ago; neither have they any more a portion for ever in anything that is done under the sun. Go your way, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works. Let your garments be always white; and let not your head lack oil.
Ezekiel 43 : 19 - You shall give to the priests the Levites that are of the seed of Zadok, who are near to me, to minister to me, says the Lord Jehovah, a young bullock for a sin-offering. And you shalt take of the blood thereof, and put it on the four horns of it, and on the four corners of the ledge, and upon the border round about: thus shall you cleanse it and make atonement for it. You shall also take the bullock of the sin-offering, and it shall be burnt in the appointed place of the house, without the sanctuary. And on the second day you shall offer a he-goat without blemish for a sin-offering; and they shall cleanse the altar, as they did cleanse it with the bullock. When you have made an end of cleansing it, you shall offer a young bullock without blemish, and a ram out of the flock without blemish. And you shall bring them near before Jehovah, and the priests shall cast salt upon them, and they shall offer them up for a burnt-offering to Jehovah. Seven days shall you prepare every day a goat for a sin-offering: they shall also prepare a young bullock, and a ram out of the flock, without blemish. Seven days shall they make atonement for the altar and purify it; so shall they consecrate it. ( 27 End ) And when they have accomplished the days, it shall be that upon the eighth day, and forward, the priests shall make your burnt-offerings upon the altar, and your peace-offerings; and I will accept you, says the Lord Jehovah.
Being Rejected (Old Testament)
Numbers 20 : 14 - And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, Thus says your brother Israel, You know all the travail that has befallen us: How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers: And when we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and has brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border: Let us pass, I pray you, through your country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your borders. And Edom said to him, You shall not pass by me, lest I come out against you with the sword. And the children of Israel said to him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of your water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet. And he said, You shall not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand. ( 21 ) Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
Jeremiah 29 : 15 - Because you have said, Jehovah has raised us up prophets in Babylon; thus says Jehovah concerning the king that sits upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity; thus says Jehovah of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad. And I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an execration, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them; because they have not hearkened to my words, says Jehovah, wherewith I sent to them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but you would not hear, says Jehovah. Hear you therefore the word of Jehovah, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon. Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes; and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah that are in Babylon, saying, Jehovah make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire; ( 23 ) because they have wrought folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I commanded them not; and I am he that knows, and am witness, says Jehovah. And concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite you shall speak, saying, Thus speaks Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because you have sent letters in your own name to all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying, Jehovah has made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Jehovah, for every man that is mad, and makes himself a prophet, that you should put him in the stocks and in shackles. Now therefore, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who makes himself a prophet to you, forasmuch as he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, The captivity is long: build you houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them? And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet. Then came the word of Jehovah to Jeremiah, saying, Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus says Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because that Shemaiah has prophesied to you, and I sent him not, and he has caused you to trust in a lie; ( 32 End ) therefore thus says Jehovah, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he behold the good that I will do to my people, says Jehovah, because he has spoken rebellion against Jehovah.
Hospitality (New Testament)
Matthew 10 : 40 - He that receives you receives me, and he that receives me receives him that sent me. He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward: and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. And whoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say to you he shall in no wise lose his reward.
Matthew 25 : 31 - But when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit on the throne of his glory: and before him shall be gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separats the sheep from the goats; and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say to them on his right hand, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.
Luke 24 : 28 - And they drew nigh to the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.
John 13 : 20 -- Verily, verily, I say to you, he that receives whoever I send receives me; and he that receives me receives him that sent me.
2 Timothy 1 : 16 - The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus: for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; but, when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me (the Lord grant to him to find mercy of the Lord in that day); and in how many things he ministered at Ephesus, you know very well.
1 Peter 4 : 8 - above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covers a multitude of sins: using hospitality one to another without murmuring:
3 John 5 - Beloved, you do a faithful work in whatever you do toward them that are brethren and strangers withal; who bore witness to your love before the church: whom you wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God: because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.
Hospitality (Old Testament)
Genesis 18 : 1 - And Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood over against him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth, and said, My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, pass not away, I pray you, from your servant: let now a little water be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:
Genesis 24 : 22 - And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold and said, Whose daughter are you? tell me, I pray you. Is there room in your father’s
2 Kings 4 : 8 - And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. And she said to her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, that passes by us continually. Let us make, I pray you, a little chamber on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a seat, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he comes to us, that he shall turn in thither. And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber and lay there. And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. And he said to him, Say now to her, Behold, you have been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for you? would you be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among my own people. And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she has no son, and her husband is old. And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. And he said, At this season, when the time comes round, you shall embrace a son. And she said, No, my lord, you man of God, do not lie to your handmaid. And the woman conceived, and bore a son at that season, when the time came round, as Elisha had said to her.
1 Chronicles 13 : 9 - And when they came to the threshing-floor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put forth his hand to the ark; and there he died before God. And David was displeased, because Jehovah had broken forth upon Uzza; and he called that place Perez-uzza, to this day. And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me? So David removed not the ark to him into the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months: and Jehovah blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.
