A - What The Maker's Manual says -
Humility is Greatness - (New Testament)
Matthew 18 : 4 - Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven
Matthew 21 : 5 - Behold, your King comes to you, Meek, and riding upon an ass
Matthew 27 : 26 - Then released he to them Barabbas; but Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered to him the whole band. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And they platted a crown of thorns and put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! And they spat upon him, and took the reed and smote him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the robe, and put on him his garments, and led him away to crucify him. And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to go with them, that he might bear his cross.
Luke 6 : 40 - The disciple is not above his teacher: but every one when he is perfected shall be as his teacher. And why behold you the mote that is in your brother's eye, but consider not the beam that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, Brother, let me cast out the mote that is in your eye, when you yourself behold not the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of your own eye, and then shall you see clearly to cast out the mote that is in your brother's eye.
Luke 14 : 7 - And he spoke a parable to those that were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief seats; saying to them, When you are bidden of any man to a marriage feast, sit not down in the chief seat; lest haply a more honorable man than you be bidden of him, and he that bade you and him shall come and say to you, Give this man place; and then you shall begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that has bidden you come, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher: then shall you have glory in the presence of all that sit at meat with you. For everyone that exalts himself shall be humbled; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted. And he said to him also that had bidden him, When you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, nor your brethren, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors; lest haply they also bid you again, and a recompense be made you. But when you make a feast, bid the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: and you shall be blessed; because they have not wherewith to recompense you: for you shall be recompensed in the resurrection of the just.
Luke 18 : 8 - Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, shall he find faith on the earth? And he spoke also this parable to certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and set all others at nought: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I get. But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, be you merciful to me a sinner. I say to you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalts himself shall be humbled; but he that humbles himself shall be exalted.
John 13 : 14 - If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
Romans 12 : 3 - For I say, through the grace that was given me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think as to think soberly, according as God has dealt to each man a measure of faith.
Romans 12 : 10 - In love of the brethren be tenderly affectioned one to another; in honor preferring one another.
2 Corinthians 10 : 1 - Now I Paul myself entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am of good courage toward you: yes, I beseech you, that I may not when present show courage with the confidence wherewith I count to be bold against some, who count of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
2 Corinthians 11 : 30 - If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things that concern my weakness.
Ephesians 5 : 21 - subjecting yourselves one to another in the fear of Christ. Wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, being himself the saviour of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives also be to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it; that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the church to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loves his own wife loves himself: for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ also the church; because we are members of his body. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great: but I speak in regard of Christ and of the church. ( 33 ) Nevertheless do you also severally love each one his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she fear her husband.
Philippians 2 : 5 - Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant
Colossians 2 : 16 - Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a feast day or a new moon or a sabbath day: which are a shadow of the things to come; but the body is Christ's.Let no man rob you of your prize by a voluntary humility and worshipping of the angels , dwelling in the things which he has seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding fast the Head, from whom all the body, being supplied and knit together through the joints and bands, increasing with the increase of God. If you died with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to ordinances, Handle not, nor taste, nor touch (all which things are to perish with the using), after the precepts and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will-worship, and humility, and severity to the body; but are not of any value against the indulgence of the flesh.
Philemon 8 - though I have all boldness in Christ to enjoin you that which is befitting, yet for love's sake I rather beseech
James 1 : 9 - let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate: and the rich, in that he is made low
James 4 : 6 - But he gives more grace. Wherefore the scripture says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
1 Peter 5 : 5 - Yes, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;
Humility is Greatness - (Old Testament)
Numbers 12 : 1 - And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. And they said, Has the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? has he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. ( Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) And the LORD spoke suddenly to Moses, and to Aaron, and to Miriam, Come out you three to the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known to him in a vision, and will speak to him in a dream. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all my house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed. And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. And Aaron said to Moses, Alas, my lord, I beseech you, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned. Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb. And Moses cried to the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech you. And the LORD said to Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again. And Miriam was shut out from the camp seven days: and the people journeyed not till Miriam was brought in again. And afterward the people removed from Hazeroth, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran.( 16 )
1 Samuel 18 : 12 - And Saul said to David, Behold, my elder daughter Merab, her will I give you to wife: only be you valiant for me, and fight Jehovah’s battles. For Saul said, Let not my hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him. And David said to Saul, Who am I, and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king? But it came to pass at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
1 Samuel 25 : 18 - Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched grain, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses. And she said to her young men, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal. And it was so, as she rode on her ass, and came down by the covert of the mountain, that, behold, David and his men came down toward her; and she met them. Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained to him: and he has returned me evil for good. God do so to the enemies of David, and more also, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light so much as one man-child. And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and alighted from her ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground. And she fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me be the iniquity; and let your handmaid, I pray you, speak in your ears, and hear you the words of your handmaid. Let not my lord, I pray you, regard this worthless fellow, even Nabal; for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I your handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom you didt send. Now therefore, my lord, as Jehovah lives, and as your soul lives, seeing Jehovah has withheld you from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now therefore let your enemies, and them that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. And now this present which your servant has brought to my lord, let it be given to the young men that follow my lord. Forgive, I pray you, the trespass of your handmaid: for Jehovah will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fights the battles of Jehovah; and evil shall not be found in you all your days. And though men be risen up to pursue you, and to seek your soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah your God; and the souls of your enemies, them shall he sling out, as from the hollow of a sling. And it shall come to pass, when Jehovah shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and shall have appointed you prince over Israel, that this shall be no grief to you, nor offence of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself. And when Jehovah shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember your handmaid.
2 Kings 22 : 17 - Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched. But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the LORD, thus shall you say to him, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, As touching the words which you have heard; Because your heart was tender, and you have humbled yourself before the LORD, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have rent your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you, says the LORD. ( 20 End ) Behold therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered into your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
Chronicles 33 : 21 - Amon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, as did Manasseh his father; and Amon sacrificed to all the graven images which Manasseh his father had made, and served them. And he humbled not himself before Jehovah, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but this same Amon trespassed more and more. And his servants conspired against him, and put him to death in his own house.
2 Chronicles 34 : 27 - because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God.... and have humbled yourself before me, and have rent your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you, says Jehovah.
Job 19 : 1 - Then Job answered and said, How long will you vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words? These ten times have you reproached me: you are not ashamed that you make yourselves strange to me. And be it indeed that I have erred, my error remains with myself. If indeed you will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach: Know now that God has overthrown me, and has compassed me with his net. Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment. He has fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness in my paths. He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. He has destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and my hope has he removed like a tree. He has also kindled his wrath against me, and he counts me to him as one of his enemies. His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle. He has put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintance are verily estranged from me.
Proverbs 3 : 31 - Envy you not the man of violence, And choose none of his ways. For the perverse is an abomination to Jehovah; But his friendship is with the upright. The curse of Jehovah is in the house of the wicked; But he blesses the habitation of the righteous.Surely he scoffs at the scoffers; But he gives grace to the lowly The wise shall inherit glory; But shame shall be the promotion of fools.
Proverbs 11 : 2 - When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the lowly is wisdom.
Proverbs 15 : 16 - Better is little, with the fear of Jehovah, Than great treasure and trouble therewith. Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is, Than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. A wrathful man stirs up contention; But he that is slow to anger appeases strife. The way of the sluggard is as a hedge of thorns; But the path of the upright is made a highway. A wise son makes a glad father; But a foolish man despises his mother. Folly is joy to him that is void of wisdom; But a man of understanding makes straight his going.
Proverbs 16 : 5 - Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to Jehovah: Though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. By mercy and truth iniquity is atoned for; And by the fear of Jehovah men depart from evil. When a man’s ways please Jehovah, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
Proverbs 18 : 12 - Before destruction the heart of man is haughty; And before honor goes humility.
25 : 27 - So for men to search out their own glory is grievous.
Proverbs 29 : 23 - A man's pride shall bring him low; But he that is of a lowly spirit shall obtain honor.
Psalm 18 : 27 - For you will save the afflicted people; But the haughty eyes you will bring down. For you will light my lamp: Jehovah my God will lighten my darkness. For by tyou I run upon a troop; And by my God do I leap over a wall. As for God, his way is perfect: The word of Jehovah is tried; He is a shield to all them that take refuge in him.
Psalm 69 : 20 - Reproach has broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: And I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none. They gave me also gall for my food; And in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. Let their table before them become a snare; And when they are in peace, let it become a trap. Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see; And make their loins continually to shake. Pour out your indignation upon them, And let the fierceness of your anger overtake them. Let their habitation be desolate; Let none dwell in their tents. For they persecute him whom you have smitten; And they tell of the sorrow of those whom you have wounded. Add iniquity to their iniquity; And let them not come into your righteousness. Let them be blotted out of the book of life, And not be written with the righteous. But I am poor and sorrowful: Let your salvation, O God, set me up on high.
Psalm 131 : 1 - ( A Song of degrees of David) Jehovah, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty : neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child. Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.
Psalm 147 : 6 - Jehovah upholds the meek: He brings the wicked down to the ground.
Isaiah 2 : 6 - For You have forsaken your people the house of Jacob, because they are filled with customs from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they strike hands with the children of foreigners. And their land is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land also is full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots. Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made. And the mean man is bowed down, and the great man is brought low: therefore forgive them not. Enter into the rock, and hide you in the dust, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty. The lofty looks of man shall be brought low, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and Jehovah alone shall be exalted in that day. For there shall be a day of Jehovah of hosts upon all that is proud and haughty, and upon all that is lifted up; and it shall be brought low; and upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan, and upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up, and upon every lofty tower, and upon every fortified wall, and upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant imagery.
Isaiah 57 : 15 - For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite. For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls that I have made. For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him; I hid my face and was wroth; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts to him and to his mourners. I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace, to him that is far off and to him that is near, says Jehovah; and I will heal him. But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, says my God, to the wicked ( 21 End ).
Isaiah 66 : 1 - Thus saith Jehovah, Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: what manner of house will ye build unto me? and what place shall be my rest? to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and that trembles at my word
Jeremiah 29 : 1 - Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon, (after that Jeconiah the king, and the queen-mother, and the eunuchs, and the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem,) by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,) saying, Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build you houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. Take you wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply you there, and be not diminished. And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to Jehovah for it; for in the peace thereof shall you have peace. For thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Let not your prophets that are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither hearken you to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. For they prophesy falsely to you in my name: I have not sent them, says Jehovah. For thus says Jehovah, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place ( 10 ).
Jeremiah 49 : 1 - Of the children of Ammon. Thus says Jehovah: Has Israel no sons? has he no heir? why then does Malcam possess Gad, and his people dwell in the cities thereof? Therefore, behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard against Rabbah of the children of Ammon; and it shall become a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel possess them that did possess him, says Jehovah. Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste; cry, you daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth: lament, and run to and fro among the fences; for Malcam shall go into captivity, his priests and his princes together. Wherefore glory you in the valleys, your flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come to me? Behold, I will bring a fear upon you, says the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, from all that are round about you; and you shall be driven out every man right forth, and there shall be none to gather together the fugitives. But afterward I will bring back the captivity of the children of Ammon, says Jehovah ( 6 )
Lamentations 3 : 36 - Who is he that says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord commands it not? Out of the mouth of the Most High comes there not evil and good? Wherefore does a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins? Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to Jehovah. Let us lift up our heart with our hands to God in the heavens. We have transgressed and have rebelled; you have not pardoned. You have covered with anger and pursued us; you have slain, You have not pitied. You have covered your self with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through. You have made us an off-scouring and refuse in the midst of the peoples. All our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us. Fear and the pit are come upon us, devastation and destruction. My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. My eye pours down, and ceases not, without any intermission, Till Jehovah look down, and behold from heaven. My eye affects my soul, because of all the daughters of my city. They have chased me sore like a bird, they that are my enemies without cause. They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone upon me. ( 54 ) Waters flowed over my head; I said, I am cut off.
Ezekiel 32 : 17 - It came to pass also in the twelfth year, in the fifteenth day of the month, that the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, to the nether parts of the earth, with them that go down into the pit. Whom do you pass in beauty? go down, and be you laid with the uncircumcised. They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword; draw her away and all her multitudes.
Amos 2 : 6 - Thus says Jehovah: For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes- they that pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father go to the same maiden, to profane my holy name:
Zephaniah 3 : 4 , 3 : 11 - Her prophets are light and treacherous persons; her priests have profaned the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law. .....In that day shall you not be put to shame for all you doings, wherein you have transgressed against me; for then I will take away out of the midst of you your proudly exulting ones, and you shall no more be haughty in my holy mountain. But I will leave in the midst of you an afflicted and poor people, and they shall take refuge in the name of Jehovah. The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth; for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
