Love - New Testament

Matthew 5 : 43 - You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy: but I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you; that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. .... You therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 22 : 34 ( Mark 12 : 28 ) But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered themselves together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, trying him: Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? And he said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second like to it is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments the whole law hangs, and the prophets.

( Mark 12 : 32 ) - And the scribe said to him, Of a truth, Teacher, you have well said that he is one; and there is none other but he: and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is much more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

Matthew 24 : 12 -And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold. But he that endures to the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come.

Matthew 25 : 40 - And the King shall answer and say to them, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it to one of these my brethren, even these least, you did it to me.Then shall he say also to them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry, and you did not give me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and you took me not in; naked, and you clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and you visited me not. Then shall they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we you hungry, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to you? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it not to one of these least, you did it not to me. And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.

John 13 : 31 - When therefore he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him; and God shall glorify him in himself, and straightway shall he glorify him. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me: and as I said to the Jews, Whither I go, you cannot come; so now I say to you. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.Simon Peter said to him, Lord, whither go you? Jesus answered, Whither I go, you cannot follow now; but you shall follow afterwards. Peter said to him, Lord, why cannot I follow you even now? I will lay down my life for you Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for me? Verily, verily, I say to you, The cock shall not crow, till you have denied me thrice.

John 15 : 13 - Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do the things which I command you. No longer do I call you servants; for the servant knows not what his lord does: but I have called you friends; for all things that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide: that whatever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. These things I command you, that you may love one another.

Romans 12 : 9 - Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. In love of the brethren be tenderly affectioned one to another; in honor preferring one another.

1 Corinthians 6 : 15 - Know you not that your bodies are members of Christ? shall I then take away the members of Christ, and make them members of a harlot? God forbid. Or know you not that he that is joined to a harlot is one body? for, The twain, says he, shall become one flesh. But he that is joined to the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man does is without the body; but he that commits fornication sins against his own body.

1 Corinthians 8 : 1 - We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. If any man thinks that he knows anything, he knows not yet as he ought to know; but if any man loves God, the same is known by him.

1 Corinthians 13 : 1 - If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And if I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; love vaunts not itself, is not puffed up, does not behave itself unseemly, seeks not its own, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; rejoices not in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.

Galatians 5 : 6 - For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision avails anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith working through love.

Ephesians 5 : 25 - Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it; that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the church to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loves his own wife loves himself: for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ also the church; because we are members of his body. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great: but I speak in regard of Christ and of the church. Nevertheless do you also severally love each one his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she fear her husband.

Philippians 1 : 7 - even as it is right for me to be thus minded on behalf of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as, both in my bonds and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace. For God is my witness, how I long after you all in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1 : 9 - And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and void of offence unto the day of Christ; being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Colossians 3 : 12 - Put on therefore, as God's elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving each other, if any man have a complaint against any; even as the Lord forgave you, so also do you: and above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness.

1 Thessalonians 3 : 11 .... and the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also do toward you; to the end he may establish your hearts unblameable in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

Hebrews 10 : 24 - let us consider one another to provoke to love and good works

1 Peter 1 : 22 - Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth to unfeigned love of the brethren, love one another from the heart fervently

1 John 3 : 11 - For this is the message which you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another: not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Marvel not, brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He that loves not abides in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

1 John 3 : 16 - Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need, and shuts up his compassion from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My Little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth.

2 John 5 - And now I beseech you, lady, not as though I wrote to you a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we should walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, even as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.

3 John 5 - Beloved, you do a faithful work in whatever you do toward them that are brethren and strangers withal; who bore witness to your love before the church: whom you will do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God: because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.

Revelation 2 : 4 - But I have this against you, that you did leave your first love. Remember therefore whence you are fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I come to you, and will move your candlestick out of its place, except you repent. But this you have, that you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him that overcomes, to him will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.

Love - Old Testament

Deuteronomy 6 : 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: you shall love Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your migh.

Judges 16 : 1 - And Samson went to Gaza, and saw there a harlot, and went in to her. And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, Let be till morning light, then we will kill him. And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and laid hold of the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and plucked them up, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron. And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lies, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give you every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver. And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray you, wherein your great strength lies, and wherewith you might be bound to afflict you. And Samson said to her, If they bind me with seven green withes that were never dried, then shall I become weak, and be as another man. Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withes which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. Now she had liers-in-wait abiding in the inner chamber. And she said to him, The Philistines are upon you, Samson. And he broke the withes, as a string of tow is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength was not known. And Delilah said to Samson, Behold, you have mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray you, wherewith you might be bound. And he said to her, If they only bind me with new ropes wherewith no work has been done, then shall I become weak, and be as another man. So Delilah took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said to him, The Philistines are upon you, Samson. And the liers-in-wait were abiding in the inner chamber. And he broke them off his arms like a thread. And Delilah said to Samson, Hitherto you have mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith you might be bound. And he said to her, If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web. And she fastened it with the pin, and said to him, The Philistines are upon you, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and plucked away the pin of the beam, and the web. And she said to him, How can you say, I love you, when your heart is not with me? you have mocked me these three times, and have not told me wherein your great strength lies. And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed to death. And he told her all his heart, and said to her, There has not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he has told me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money in their hand. And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. And she said, The Philistines are upon you, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free. But he knew not that Jehovah was departed from him. And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house.

1 Samuel 18 : 20 - And Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, You shall this day be my son-in-law a second time. And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you: now therefore be the king’s son-in-law. And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seems it to you a light thing to be the king’s son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed? And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spoke David. And Saul said, Thus shall you say to David, The king desires not any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. And the days were not expired; and David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife. And Saul saw and knew that Jehovah was with David; and Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him.

2 Samuel 13 : 23 - And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, your servant has sheep-shearers; let the king, I pray you, and his servants go with your servant. And the king said to Absalom, No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him. Then said Absalom, If not, I pray you, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said to him, Why should he go with you? But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, Mark you now, when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine; and when I say to you, Smite Amnon, then kill him; fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant. And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man got him up upon his mule, and fled. And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that the tidings came to David, saying, Absalom has slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left. Then the king arose, and rent his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent. And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead; for by the appointment of Absalom this has been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar. Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead; for Amnon only is dead. But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill-side behind him. And Jonadab said to the king, Behold, the king’s sons are come: as your servant said, so it is. And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voice, and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore. But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihur, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years. And the soul of king David longed to go forth to Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.

2 Samuel 18 : 1 - And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also. But the people said, You shall not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore now it is better that you be ready to succor us out of the city. And the king said to them, What seems you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate-side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands. And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom. So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim. And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men. For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured. And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between heaven and earth; and the mule that was under him went on. And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak. And Joab said to the man that told him, And, behold, you saw it, and why did you not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given you ten pieces of silver, and a girdle. And the man said to Joab, Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king’s son; for in our hearing the king charged you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom. Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hid from the king), then you yourself would have set yourself against me. Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with you. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. And ten young men that bare Joab’s armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him. And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people. And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every one to his tent. Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king’s dale; for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom’s monument, to this day. Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that Jehovah has avenged him of his enemies. And Joab said to him, You shall not be the bearer of tidings this day, but you shall bear tidings another day; but this day you shall bear no tidings, because the king’s son is dead. Then said Joab to the Cushite, Go, tell the king what you have seen. And the Cushite bowed himself to Joab, and ran. Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But come what may, let me, I pray you, also run after the Cushite. And Joab said, Wherefore will you run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the tidings? But come what may, said he, I will run. And he said to him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite. Now David was sitting between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate to the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, a man running alone. And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the porter, and said, Behold, another man running alone. And the king said, He also brings tidings. And the watchman said, I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and comes with good tidings. And Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, All is well. And he bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, Blessed be Jehovah your God, who has delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king. And the king said, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was. And the king said, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still. And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, Tidings for my lord the king; for Jehovah has avenged you this day of all them that rose up against you. And the king said to the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise up against you to do you hurt, be as that young man is. And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would I had died for you, O Absalom, my son, my son!

Psalm 119 : 41 - (VAV). Let your lovingkindnesses also come to me, O Jehovah, Even your salvation, according to your word. So shall I have an answer for him that reproaches me; For I trust in your word. And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; For I have hoped in your ordinances. So shall I observe your law continually For ever and ever. And I shall walk at liberty; For I have sought your precepts. I will also speak of your testimonies before kings, And shall not be put to shame. And I will delight myself in your commandments, Which I have loved. I will lift up my hands also to your commandments, which I have loved; And I will meditate on your statutes.

Proverbs 10 : 12 - Hatred stirs up strifes; But love covers all transgressions.

Song of Songs 8 : 1 - Oh that you were as my brother, That sucked the breasts of my mother! When I should find you without, I would kiss you; Yes, and none would despise me. I would lead you, and bring you into my mother’s house, Who would instruct me; I would cause you to drink of spiced wine, Of the juice of my pomegranate. His left hand should be under my head, And his right hand should embrace me. I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, That you stir not up, nor awake my love, Until he please.

Song of Songs 8 : 6 - Set me as a seal upon your heart, As a seal upon your arm: For love is strong as death; Jealousy is cruel as Sheol; The flashes thereof are flashes of fire, A very flame of Jehovah. Many waters cannot quench love, Neither can floods drown it: If a man would give all the substance of his house for love, He would utterly be contemned.

Jeremiah 31 : 1 - At that time, says Jehovah, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people. Thus says Jehovah, The people that were left of the sword found favor in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest. Jehovah appeared of old to me, saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn you. Again will I build you, and you shall be built, O virgin of Israel: again shall you be adorned with your tabrets, and shall go forth in the dances of them that make merry. Again shall you plant vineyards upon the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit thereof. For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the hills of Ephraim shall cry, Arise you, and let us go up to Zion to Jehovah our God. For thus says Jehovah, Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout for the chief of the nations: publish you, praise you, and say, O Jehovah, save your people, the remnant of Israel. Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the uttermost parts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travails with child together: a great company shall they return hither. ( 9 ) They shall come with weeping; and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way wherein they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first-born.

God - The Maker - is Love ( New Testament)

Luke 12 : 24 - Consider the ravens, that they sow not, neither reap; which have no store-chamber nor barn; and God feeds them: of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to the measure of his life? If then you are not able to do even that which is least, why are you anxious concerning the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; yet I say to you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God does so clothe the grass in the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more shall he clothe you, O you of little faith?

Luke 15 : 18 - And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight: I am no more worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: and bring the fatted calf, and kill it, and let us eat, and make merry: for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

1 John 4 : 8 - Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loves is begotten of God, and knows God. He that loves not knows not God; for God is love. Herein was the love of God manifested in us, that God has sent his only begotten Son into the world that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No man has beheld God at any time: if we love one another, God abides in us, and his love is perfected in us:

1 John 4 : 16 - And we know and have believed the love which God has in us. God is love; and he that abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

Luke 10 : 25 - And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and made trial of him, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And he said to him, What is written in the law? how read you? And he answering said, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. And he said to him, You have answered right: this do, and you shall live.

God - The Maker - is Love ( Old Testament)

Psalm 145 : 1 - I will extol you, my God, O King; And I will bless your name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless you; And I will praise your name for ever and ever. Great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised; And his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall laud your works to another, And shall declare your mighty acts. Of the glorious majesty of your honor, And of your wondrous works, will I meditate. And men shall speak of the might of your terrible acts; And I will declare your greatness. They shall utter the memory of your great goodness, And shall sing of your righteousness. Jehovah is gracious, and merciful; Slow to anger, and of great lovingkindness. Jehovah is good to all; And his tender mercies are over all his works.(9)
