On Dunking - 'Baptism' (New Testament)
3 : 4 - Now John himself had his raiment
of camel's hair, and a leather girdle about his loins; and his food was
locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem,
and all Judaea, and all the region round about the Jordan; and they were
baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing
their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming
to his baptism, he said to them, You offspring of vipers, who warned you
to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of
repentance: and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to
our father: for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. And even now
the axe lies at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that brings
not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
3 : 1 - 11 ( Mark 1 : 4 - 8, Luke 3 : 2 : 16 : John 1 : 24 - 31
(parts) - Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate
being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his
brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and
Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, in the highpriesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,
the word of God came to John the son of
Zacharias in the wilderness.John came, who baptized in the wilderness
and preached the baptism of repentance to remission of sins... as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make you ready
the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled,
And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall
become straight, And the rough ways smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.And
there went out to him all the country of Judaea, and all they of Jerusalem;
And they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
And John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leathern girdle about
his loins, and did eat locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying,
There comes after me he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose
shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I baptized you in water;
But he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
3 : 11 - I indeed baptize you in
water unto repentance: but he that comes after me is mightier than I,
whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the
Holy Spirit and in fire: whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly
cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner,
but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.
3 : 13 - Then
comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan
to John, to be baptized of him. But John would have hindered him, saying,
I have need to be baptized of you, and come you to me? But Jesus answering
said to him, Suffer it now: for thus it becomes us to fulfil all righteousness.
Then he suffered him. And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway
from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and
coming upon him; and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
7 : 24 - And when the messengers of John were departed, he began
to say to the multitudes concerning John, What went you out into the wilderness
to behold? a reed shaken with the wind? But what went you out to see?
a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that are gorgeously apparelled,
and live delicately, are in kings' courts. But what went you out to see?
a prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet. This is he
of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, Who
shall prepare your way before you. I say to you, Among them that are born
of women there is none greater than John: yet he that is but little in
the kingdom of God is greater than he.
And all the people when they heard, and the publicans, justified God,
being baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not
baptized of him.
1 : 29 - On the morrow he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, Behold,
the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin
of the world! This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is become
before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not; but that he should
be made manifest to Israel, for this cause came I baptizing in water.
51 : 1 - Have mercy upon
me, O God, according to your lovingkindness: According to the multitude
of your tender mercies blot out
my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions;
And my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned, And
done that which is evil in your sight; That you may be justified when
you speak, And be clear when you judge. Behold, I was brought forth in
iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts; And in the hidden partyou will make me to know wisdom. Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I shall be whiter
than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness,
That the bones which you have broken may rejoice. Hide your face from
my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away
from your presence; And take not your holy
Spirit from me.
8 : 36 -
And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch
said, Behold, here is water; what does hinder me to be baptized? And Philip
said, If you believe with all your heart, you may. And he answered and
said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded
the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both
Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. And when they came up out
of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught
away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing.
But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached the gospel
to all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
6 : 3 - Or are you ignorant that all we
who were baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into his death? We were buried
therefore with him through baptism to death: that like as Christ was raised
from the dead through the glory of the
Father, so we also might walk in newness
of life. For if we have become united with him in the likeness of
his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection; knowing
this, that our old man was crucified with
him, that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer
be in bondage to sin; for he that has died is justified from sin. But
if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall
also live with him; knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dies
no more; death no more has dominion over him. For the death that he died,
he died to sin once: but the life that he lives, he lives to God. Even
so reckon you also yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ
Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that you should
obey the lusts thereof: neither present your members to sin as instruments
of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God, as alive from the dead,
and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall
not have dominion over you: for you are not under law, but under grace.
Peter 3 : 21 - Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he
might bring us to God; being put to death
in the flesh, but made alive in the
spirit; in which also he went and preached to the spirits in prison, that
aforetime were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the
days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight
souls, were saved through water: which also after a true likeness does
now save you, even baptism, not the
putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good
conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus
Christ; who is on the right hand of God, having gone into heaven;
angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.
18 : 24 - Now a certain Jew named Apollos,
an Alexandrian by race, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus; and he was mighty
in the scriptures. This man had been
instructed in the way of the Lord; and
being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning
Jesus, knowing only the baptism of John:
and he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and
Aquila heard him, they took him to them, and expounded to him the way
of God more accurately. And when he was minded to pass over into Achaia,
the brethren encouraged him, and wrote
to the disciples to receive him: and when he was come, he helped them
much that had believed through grace; for he powerfully confuted the Jews,
and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.
9 : 18 - And Ananias departed,
and entered into the house; and laying his hands on him said, Brother
Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, who appeared to you in the way which you came,
has sent me, that you may receive your sight,
and be filled with the Holy Spirit. And straightway there fell from his
eyes as it were scales, and he received his sight; and he arose and was
baptized; and he took food and was strengthened. And he was certain days
with the disciples that were at
Damascus. And straightway in the synagogues he proclaimed Jesus, that he is the Son of God. And all that heard him
were amazed, and said, Is not this he that in Jerusalem made havoc of
them that called on this name? and he had come hither for this intent,
that he might bring them bound before the chief priests. But Saul increased
the more in strength, and confounded the Jews that dwelt at Damascus,
proving that this is the Christ.
1 : 4 - , he charged them not to depart
from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, you
heard from me: For John indeed baptized with water; but you shall be baptized
in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.
3 : 23 - After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land
of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. And John also
was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there:
and they came, and were baptized. For John was not yet cast into prison.
There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John's disciples with
a Jew about purifying. And they came to
John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with you beyond the Jordan,
to whom you have borne witness, behold, the same baptizes, and all men
come to him. John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except
it has been given him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness, that
I said, I am not the Christ, but, that
I am sent before him. He that has the bride is the bridegroom:
but the friend of the bridegroom, that stands and hears him, rejoices
greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is
made full. He must increase, but I must decrease. He that comes from above
is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth
he speaks: he that comes from heaven is above all. What he has seen and
heard, of that he bears witness; and no man receives his witness. He that
has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent speaks the words
of God: for he gives not the Spirit by measure.
2 : 2 - And
suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty
wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared
to them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each
one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave
10 : 44 - While Peter
yet spoke these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word. And
they of the circumcision that believed were
amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. For they heard them speak
with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid
the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy
Spirit as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name
of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to
tarry certain days.
11 : 15 - And as I
began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on
them, even as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the
word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but
you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit. If then God gave to them the
like gift as he did also to us,
when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ,
who was I, that I could withstand God? And when they heard these things,
they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then to the Gentiles
also has God granted repentance to life.
16 : 15 - And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought
us, saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide
there. And she constrained us.
19 : 1 - And it came to pass, that, while
Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came
to Ephesus, and found certain disciples:
and he said to them, Did you receive the Holy
Spirit when you believed? And they said to
him, No, we did not so much as hear whether the
Holy Spirit was given. And he said, Into what then were you baptized?
And they said, Into John's baptism. And Paul said, John baptized with
the baptism of repentance, saying to
the people that they should believe on him that should come after him,
that is, on Jesus. And when they heard
this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit
came on them; and they spoke with tongues,
and prophesied. And they were
in all about twelve men.
Corinthians 10 : 1 - For
I would not, brethren, have you ignorant, that our fathers were all under
the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized unto
Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and did all eat the same spiritual
food; and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a
spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.
Howbeit with most of them God was not
well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things
were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil
things, as they also lusted. Neither be idolaters, as were some of
them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose
up to play. Neither let us commit fornication,
as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
Neither let us make trial of the Lord, as some of them made trial, and
perished by the serpents. Neither murmur , as some of them murmured, and
perished by the destroyer. Now these things happened to them by way of
example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come. Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
On Dunking - 'Baptism' (New Testament)
Kings 5 : 10 - Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him Jehovah had given victory to Syria: he was also a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.
And the Syrians had gone out in bands, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maiden; and she waited on Naaman’s wife. And she said to her mistress, Would that my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! then would he recover him of his leprosy. And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maiden that is of the land of Israel. And the king of Syria said, Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment. And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, And now when this letter is come to you, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to you, that you may recover him of his leprosy. And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man does send to me to recover a man of his leprosy? but consider, I pray you, and see how he seeks a quarrel against me. And it was so, when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore have you rent your clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel. So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariots,
and stood at the door of the house of Elisha. And Elisha sent a messenger
to him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh
shall come again to you, and you shall be clean. But Naaman was wroth,
and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to
me, and stand, and call on the name of Jehovah his God, and wave his hand
over the place, and recover the leper. Are not Abanah and Pharpar, the
rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash
in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. And his servants
came near, and spoke to him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid
you do some great thing, would you not have done it? how much rather then,
when he says to you, Wash, and be clean? Then went he down, and dipped
himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man
of God; and his flesh came again like to the flesh of a little child,
and he was clean
